One glazed doughnut sits on a desk directly in your line of sight. You, in pursuit of a leaner physique, resolve not to eat it. The doughnut doesn鈥檛 budge and nor do you; it鈥檚 a sprinkle-topped Mexican stand-off loaded with jam and 300 calories. Whether you win or lose the battle is a simple matter of willpower.
Now, before you give in to the jam-splattered conclusion, know this: willpower can be trained. Just like a bicep, your resolve gets fatigued as you use it and gets stronger if you exercise it properly. Research into self-control shows that if you exercise discipline to meet one goal, you will be mentally fitter to take on the next.

Willpower is not hard-wired into your personality. In fact, it ebbs and flows thanks to glucose. Your body converts food into this simple sugar and your brain uses it when you concentrate and make choices. When glucose levels are low, you鈥檙e more likely to give in to temptation. And it鈥檚 not just doughnuts, but vices of all kinds: cigarettes, sex, the internet, yawning in a meeting, rolling your eyes at your wife. Anything you have to fight the urge to do.
One of the main reasons shedding a stone or two is difficult is that the willpower to achieve long-term goals shares the same store of glucose as smaller, everyday goals.

Research by Dr Roy Baumeister, a psychologist at Florida State University and Willpower鈥檚 co-author, found that people actively resist temptation for three to four hours every day. 鈥淲hen willpower is low, people abandon long-term goals and operate on a short-term focus,鈥 Baumeister says.
Even simple decision-making drains your willpower. If you make lots of little choices ahead of meal-time 鈥 comparing calories or deciding where to eat 鈥 you suffer from ‘decision fatigue’, leaving you weaker in the face of temptation two hours later. Your willpower muscle gets overworked and tired, leaving nothing in the tank to fight the next lure.
